March 21, 2016Moshiach [Messiah] Purim 5776
Many of our rabbis describe the advent of the coming Moshiach [Messiah] of Israel, the son of Yishai [Jesse], one of our very well know rabbis, Rabbi Moses Maimonides comments: "What is the
manner of Messiah's advent....there shall rise up one of whom none
have known before, and signs and wonders which they shall see
performed by him will be the proofs of his true origin; for the
Almighty, where he declares to us his mind upon this matter, says,
`Behold a man whose name is the Branch, and he shall branch forth out
of his place' (Zech. 6:12). And Isaiah speaks similarly of the time
when he shall appear, without father or mother or family being known,
He came up as a sucker before him, and as a root out of dry earth,
etc....in the words of Isaiah, when describing the manner in
which kings will harken to him, At him kings will shut their
mouth; for that which had not been told them have they seen, and that
which they had not heard they have perceived." (From the
Letter to the South (Yemen), quoted in The Fifty-third Chapter
of Isaiah According to the Jewish Interpreters , Ktav
Publishing House, 1969, Volume 2, pages 374-5)
What
is the Name of King Messiah? R.Abba bar Kahana said: “ADONAI
(Master) is his name, or it is written, I will raise unto David a
righteous SHOOT in his day Judah shall be saved…And this is the
name whereby he shall be called: YHWH is our righteousness
(Jer.23:5-6).”For R.Levi said: “Happy is the country whose name
is like its king and the name of whose king is like the name of its
[Elohim]...”R. Y’hoshu’a said: SHOOT [Tzemah] is his name, for
it is written, Behold a man whose name is SHOOT and Who shall shoot
up out of his place and build the temple of [YHWH] (Zech.6:12).”...In
the house of R. Shela they said: “SHILO is the name of the Messiah,
for it is written, Until SHILO will come (Gen.49.10)… R. Biva of
Srungaya said: “NEHIRA [LIGHT] is his name, for it is written, and
the light [Nehira] dwelleth with Him (Dan.2:22), and it is spelled
NEHIRA… (Lam.Rab.1:51,
p.36, ad Lam.1:16)

(branch) of David
who
will arise with the Interpreter of the Torah who will rise up
in Tziyon in the
last
days, as it is written [Amos 9:11] 'I will raise up the sukkah

In
Midrash Thanhuma, we find the following:
R.
Nahman say, The word “man” in the passage, every man a head of
the house of his fathers (Num. i. 4), refers to the Messiah the son
of David, as it is written, “Behold the man
whose name is Zemah” (the branch); where Yonathan interprets,
Behold the man
Messiah (Zech. Vi. 12): and so it is said, “A man
of pains and known to sickness.” (Quoted in The
Fifty-Third Chapter of Isaiah According to the Jewish Interpreters,
page 11 (translations by S.R. Driver and A.D. Neubauer), KTAV
publishing House, New York, 1969.)
I
have learnt it from the words of R. Mosheh had-Darshan: The redeemer
whom I shall raise up from among you will have no father, as it is
written, “Behold the man whose name is Zemah [branch], and he shall
branch up out of his place” (Zech. vi. 12); and so Isaiah says,
“And he came up like a sucker,” etc.
Says
R. B’rckhyah, The Holy One said to Israel…the redeemer whom I
shall raise up out of your midst will have no father also, as it is
said, “Behold the man whose name is the Branch, and he shall branch
up out of his place” (Zech. vi. 12); and similarly by Isaiah, “And
he came up as a sucker before him.”
Says
R. B'rekhyah, the Holy One said to Israel, you have spoken before me,
saying, we are orphans and have no father (Lam. v. 3): the redeemer
whom I shall raise up out of your midst will have no father [Anusi[m]] also, as
it is said, 'Behold the man whose name is the Branch, and he shall
branch up out of his place (Zech. vi. 12); and similarly by Isaiah,
and he shall come up as a sucker before him. (The
Suffering Servant of Isaiah According to the Jewish Interpreters, p.
33)
The wicked Bila'am's
final statement (Numbers 24:l7) opens with a prophecy concerning two
Mashiachs (King David and the ultimate redeemer, King
Mashiach, a descendant from King David):
I see it, but not now;
I behold it, but not in the near future.
A star shall go forth from Jacob,
and a staff [shevet] shall arise in Israel.
I behold it, but not in the near future.
A star shall go forth from Jacob,
and a staff [shevet] shall arise in Israel.
In the original Hebrew, this
statement contains 12 words, hinting at the 12 Jewish months of the
year. The eleventh word of the series--shevet
("staff")--parallels and hints at the eleventh month of the
Jewish year--Shevat. During this month, we celebrate the "New
Year of the Trees," hinting at the New year of the Tree of Life.
The Tree of Life symbolizes the Moshiach, the
descendent of King David, about whom it is stated, "A man whose
name is Tzemach ['growth'], and who shall grow up
(Yitzmach) out of his place" (Zechariah 6:l2).
(Interestingly, the verse we have been discussing (Numbers 24:l7)
continues, "and he will crush" [U'machatz] which
contains the same letters as the Hebrew word VeTzamach-- "and
he will grow").
The Hebrew letter with which
G-d created the month of Shevat--according
to the Kabbalistic text, Sefer
Yetzira--is the letter tzadik
(whose name means "the righteous one") about which it
states, "The Tzadik
is the foundation of the world" (Proverbs l0:25). Furthermore,
"The Tzadik
eats
to satisfy his soul" (Proverbs l3:25); the sense of "eating"
is the special sense of the month of Shevat,
and when one eats of the fruits of
the Tree of Life, one "lives eternally."
The letter tzadik
alludes to the Tree of Life [in that it is the second of the two
Hebrew letters that form the word "tree" in Hebrew; its
shape represents a tree; and furthermore, it is the 18th
letter of the alphabet, 18 being the numerical value of the word for
life, (chai)], which is in the midst of the Garden of Eden
(the "garden" of the souls of Israel, out of whose midst
sprouts the soul of Moshiach, the tree of life).
The Rambam, at the
conclusion of the section in the Mishnah Torah entitled "The
Laws of Kings" (Chapter ll, Halacha 1), states:
"The King Mashiach
will rise forth and return the Kingdom of David to its former
state…The Torah testifies [in several places] concerning him [the
King Mashiach]…[amongst them,] in the portion of Bila'am whose
prophecies concern two messianic figures: the first Mashiach is King
David who saved Israel from its oppressors; the final Mashiach will
rise forth from his [King David's] descendents and save Israel in the
end of days. Bila'am prophesizes: 'I see it, but not now'-- this
refers to King David; 'I behold it, but not in the near future'--
this refers to the King Mashiach; 'A star shall go forth from
Jacob'-- this refers to King David; 'and a staff shall arise in
Israel'-- this refers to the King Mashiach"
Thus, we find that "I
behold it" parallels "a staff will arise" (both
referring to the King Mashiach) relating to the Kabbalistic
idea that the Jewish tribe paralleling the month of Shevat is
Asher (cognate to the Hebrew word for "I behold
it"--ashurenu).
Now let go and see what is lurking under this code:
